The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Malware

In chess battle, to win, you have to anticipate your enemy's every move and put yourself in their shoes. It is almost the same to how we should battle malwares (virus, trojan, worms & etc). You have a better chance to prevent malwares from invading your beloved computer if you can think like their creators. Here is an interesting article which was originally posted by Larry Seltzer. Its about The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Malware.

1. Trick the user. Make them think the program is something they really want to run.
2. Obscure your code. Use packers and other tricks to make the program difficult to analyze.
3. Make it as light as possible in terms of size to make the moment of infection faster.
4. Make it as stealthy as possible so as not to make the user suspect because 'my computer runs slow' or 'what is this process?'
5. Have as many anti-debug and anti-vm tricks as possible, to avoid today's malware analysis automations. In the end, it will be detected but many hours of not being detected means more time to spread unimpeded..
6. Make it as flexible as possible. The more tasks it can do, the more profit you can get (password stealing, spam sending, ddosing, click fraud, etc). Typically, it can even be updated to do different or better tasks.
7. Manage with a bullet-proof Internet infrastructure for handling the malware operation. This is important, and sadly easy. There's more than enough countries and ISPs that don't care very much about people like you and it takes ages to shut down a malware site.

Spread the knowledge...

Calculate the ISO Start of Year Date

Here is a formula to calculate the ISO Start of Year date for any legal Excel date. (Credit to Shane Devenshire for this excel formula)

=("1/4/"&YEAR(A1))-MOD("1/2/"&YEAR(A1),7)

This assumes that A1 is a valid date. With this formula you enter any date in a year and Excel returns the ISO Start of Year date. For example if you enter 9/11/09 in B2 the result of this formula is 12/29/08.

One of my favorite topic on this blog are softwares that helps hiding applications that you don't want your boss to see. Blog post like hide your browser title and hide windows programs were the few I have discussed. Another freeware that almost perform the same task is Don't Panic.

I was finishing our HRIS justification document when my Boss called. She asked me to remove a portion of the document specifically pages 9 to 14. Of course I can do it by going to page 9 and press delete until it scrolled to the content of Page 14, but this is obviously tedious. Here is an easier way.

1. Press F5 to display the Go To tab of the Find and Replace dialog box then enter 9 on the texbox.

Recover Microsoft Outlook Attachment with OLK Finder

Microsoft Outlook secretly saves attachments in a temporary Internet files subfolder. These attachments can be accessed anytime as long as the temporary folder has not been cleared. Few people knows about it so they think that once you delete an email the attachment is permanently gone. Manually you can locate the temporary Internet files (OLK folder) from Windows Explorer but this may be little tedious for non-techie people. A more easier way to recover an attachment is by using a freeware like OLK Finder.

A better way to lock your Windows PC is to use USB flash drive as a Key. With the use of PREDATOR software, your USB flash drive can serve as lock key similar to your car key.
